Monitor Net’s Christmas Shopping Tips to Stay Safe This Holiday Season

As a security company, we see and respond to crime every day.

We see the aftermath of stolen wallets, hijacked vehicles, empty bank accounts, and a shattered sense of security. Every December, the same preventable mistakes lead to the same devastating outcomes. These Christmas shopping tips come from real incidents we have attended and real victims we have helped.

Shopping Smart During the Holiday Season

Criminals love the holidays. Distracted shoppers, crowded malls, and loaded shopping bags make their job easy. Our reaction officers have responded to countless incidents where people lost everything because they left a handbag in a trolley for ten seconds.

Travel light. Leave unnecessary cards and jewellery at home. Shop with friends or family when possible. Criminals avoid groups and target people walking alone.

Keep your wallet zipped and pressed against your body at all times. Never set it down in plain sight, not in your trolley, not on a counter, not beside your shopping bags. Thieves are watching and waiting for that one moment of distraction.

Avoid flashing cash. Use card payments whenever possible. This protects your money and helps you track your spending against your Christmas budget. The people we see struggling in January are the ones who lost control of their finances in December.

Protecting Your Money

Card fraud spikes during the holiday shopping season. Criminals use skimming devices, shoulder surfing, and social engineering to steal your details. We have seen this pattern repeat year after year.

  • Cover your PIN every single time
  • If someone is standing too close or watching you, cancel the transaction and walk away
  • Trust your instincts if something feels wrong
  • Never hand your card to a waiter or cashier and let it leave your sight
  • Never let anyone “help” you enter your PIN
  • Double-check payment details when using banking apps
  • Watch for fake profiles with names that look almost right
  • Monitor your bank statements daily during the holidays
  • Fraudulent charges are easier to reverse when caught early
  • Turn on free transaction alerts from your bank

Parking Lot Safety

Parking areas are high-risk zones. This is where carjacking happens, where smash-and-grabs occur, and where people get robbed while loading their shopping. Our teams regularly recover stolen vehicles from these situations.

Park in well-lit areas with visible security. Check your insurance cover before the holidays, not after something happens.

Never leave valuables visible in your car. Laptops, tablets, shopping bags, even empty branded bags signal to thieves that you have stuff worth stealing. Lock everything in the trunk.

Here is critical advice: always check your car is locked by pulling the door handle. Car remote jamming is one of the most common vehicle crimes in South Africa. Criminals use a signal blocker to prevent your car remote from working. You press the button, hear nothing, assume your car is locked, and walk away. It is not locked. They wait for you to leave, then help themselves.

Keeping Your Family Safe

The festive season is about family and friends doing things together. With a few precautionary measures, a day at the mall can be a safe and enjoyable experience, especially for the kids.

Before entering the mall, agree on a meeting point like the information counter. If anyone gets separated, they go straight there and wait. Make sure everyone understands where this rendezvous point is before you start shopping.

Ensure all family members have each other’s phone numbers saved and fully charged phones. A dead battery at the wrong moment turns a minor issue into a serious one.

Bring basic first aid supplies. Plasters, pain relief, and antihistamines. Save emergency numbers on your phone, including your medical aid details.

Avoid shopping during opening and closing hours. Armed robberies happen when staff are distracted with setup or cashing up and when foot traffic is low. Plan your visit during busier periods.

Online Shopping Safety

If you prefer to shop online, you can still fall victim to fraud. Scammers create fake websites with prices that seem too good to be true. They are.

Only buy from trusted sites. Look for “https://” in the address bar. Read reviews. If you cannot verify a store is legitimate, do not enter your payment details.

Never click promotional links in emails or social media messages. Phishing attacks increase dramatically during the holidays. Type the retailer’s address directly into your browser.

Use strong, creative passwords. Enable two-factor authentication. Never share OTPs or card details over WhatsApp or phone calls. No legitimate company will ask for this.

Factor in shipping costs before checkout. Start shopping early to avoid rush fees and ensure delivery before Christmas. Many stores offer better prices and reliable delivery when you order in advance.

Delivery Scams

Delivery scams are everywhere now. You receive an SMS or WhatsApp claiming a failed delivery or requesting a small fee to release your parcel. The message looks real. It is not.

Track orders only through official retailer apps or websites. Courier companies will never ask for your PIN, OTP, or card details. If a message seems suspicious, contact the retailer directly using contact information from their official site.

Delivery drivers should never need to enter your home. If someone insists, refuse. Accept packages at the door.

Home Safety After Shopping

Your precautions should not stop when you get home. Do not unload shopping with the garage door open for the neighbourhood to see. Criminals scout for signs of new purchases.

Do not post shopping hauls on social media. You are advertising exactly what you have and when you might not be home. Crime in our areas continues to rise, and criminals actively monitor social media for targets.

Store gifts away from windows. A tree surrounded by wrapped presents looks festive. It also tells anyone walking past that your home has valuable items inside. Consider installing motion-sensor lights for added security.

If you do not already have a home security system in place, now is the time to act. Our alarm installation and 24/7 alarm monitoring services ensure your property is protected around the clock.

Why This Matters

We recently published our own festive season safety tips because we know what happens when people let their guard down. Our armed response teams are out there every day, but prevention is always better than reaction.

These Christmas shopping tips exist because we have seen what happens when people ignore them. Situational awareness is your best defence. Stay alert. Trust your instincts. Take basic precautions.

Do this, and you can focus on what matters: enjoying the holiday season with your loved ones without becoming another statistic. For comprehensive security solutions for your home or business, contact Monitor Net today. We are here to help you stay safe this festive season and beyond.
